Treating Depression and Anxiety Naturally with Holistic Care
A Functional Medicine Approach to Mental Wellness

At Dr. Beth Bartlett’s Holistic Health, we believe that mental health is deeply intertwined with physical health. When you feel trapped by persistent sadness or a racing mind, your body is often sending a signal that something underneath the surface is out of balance. Instead of simply masking symptoms, our functional medicine approach focuses on treating depression and anxiety naturally by identifying and addressing the biological “root causes”—from gut health to hormonal shifts—that influence how you feel every day.
Depression: What is it?
Clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for an extended period of time.
Symptoms of depression may include:
Chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, digestive disturbances, appetite changes, muscle and back pain, headaches, restlessness, irritability, being quick to anger, and feelings of unworthiness or inadequacy.
How to Treat Depression Naturally
A thorough evaluation is recommended, but not limited to: Metabolic disturbances, heavy metal toxicity, dental disturbances, improper nutrition, lack of exercise, brain chemical imbalances, thyroid disorders, viral infections, candida, hypoglycemia, and allergies.
Anxiety: What is it?
Stressful life situations can contribute to a common condition, known as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
Symptoms of acute anxiety can include:
- Shortness of breath
- Heart palpitations
- Dizziness
- Hot flashes, sweating, or chills
- Nausea
- A feeling of unreality or an impending sense of disaster/doom
A constant state of alertness in the body can lead to symptoms of chronic anxiety: headaches, chronic aches and pains, depression, nightmares, insomnia, muscle twitches, decreased libido, overall inability to relax, startle easily, and a constant state of unease.
How to Treat Anxiety Naturally
A thorough health history and targeted evaluation of the endocrine system (hormones), nervous system (toxicity), and immune system (food allergies/sensitivities) are all possible courses of action.
