What exactly is inflammation?

It is the process by which the immune system recognizes and removes harmful and foreign stimuli and begins the healing process. There are two types of inflammation, it can be either acute or chronic.

Acute vs Chronic

Acute Inflammation

Inflammation is your body’s response to injury or acute infection. If you break your arm or have an infection, your body creates inflammation so it can heal. This is often called an “inflammatory response”! In certain situations, this response will accelerate healing.

Chronic Inflammation

When inflammation doesn’t go away or appears when there is no real threat, it is considered chronic inflammation. It is one of the main underlying causes of many common symptoms and conditions such as:

  • Acne
  • Allergies (both environmental and food-related allergies)
  • Anxiety
  • Asthma
  • Chest pain
  • Cough
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Eczema/Psoriasis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Heart disease
  • Hot flashes
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Joint pain
  • PMS
  • Sinus problems
  • Weight gain

Solutions

There are many causes of chronic inflammation such as surgery, aging, immune deficiency, and long-term stress. However, a diet of high sugar and processed foods is one of the biggest causes of chronic inflammation.

Reduce Inflammatory Foods:

  • Alcohol (in excess)
  • Artificial colors (in candy, juice, powdered drink mixes, etc.)
  • Artificial preservatives
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Caffeine (in excess)
  • Deep-fried foods
  • Hydrogenated oils
  • Monosodium glutamate, or MSG (in salty junk food like flavored chips)
  • Processed meat (deli meat)
  • Sugar
